Living can be fatal! Millions of providers around the world everyday kiss loved ones goodbye and then just never come home.
They become victims, statistics, of work related accidents on the job due to interactions with man’s inventions and nature.
Workers and industry in every corner of the globe deal with the possibility, and the eventuality, of an on the job fatality or injury, everyday.
In Canada, we are fortunate to have in place a system to train employees and workers in work safe regulations and practices to prevent accidents and fatalities on the job. Despite this, WorkSafe BC reported 136,000 on the job injuries to workers in BC’s employment sector in 2006, with 976 of these injures resulting in a fatality to workers on the job due to work related activities and occupational diseases.
Does this seem high? Remember; in most parts of the world statistics aren’t kept on workers related injuries accept in the minds and lives of those who are injured. The injured worker is often shunned by employers and their plight ignored by fellow employees still on the job, they are often left to float alone on a river of despair, isolation and often a slow death. In actuality, the numbers are pretty small compared to the numbers before the WorkSafe programs were put in place, and they been a blessing for many of BC’s injured workers over the years and their families.
BC’s workers benefit from at system in place that has helped workers injured on the job receive compensation while off the job for their job related injuries and this policy should obviously be implemented in all work situations around the world. A beautiful concept at birth, BC’s work related injury programs have in recent years become a system often abused by generations of workers looking for easy money with time off.
Reports have been heard whispered in the shadows of employers manipulating the system to cut back on the amount of shekels paid into province wide compensation programs by employers, the rates paid by employers are determined by the number of on the job injures on a companies work site during a year. Employees not being held responsible for on the job safety, employers being allowed to manipulate the system and government officials paid to implement a system to prevent on the job fatalities and injuries creating loopholes by which employers can skirt the regulations put in place to prevent on the job injuries and fatalities. Is it a surprise on the job fatalities and injuries are high despite the system in place to prevent them?
The all mighty shekel rules in British Columbia as it does around the world and as long as British Columbian’s as a whole are more worried about the amount of shekels they have, then workers in BC’s industries will continue to fall at high rates, despite whatever regulations might be in place?
Why are humans more interested in collecting shekels?
There is in human nature generally more of the fool than of the wise, we are all puppets on invisible strings manipulated by electro-chemical impulses and mysterious forces we cannot seem to control, we are all as nature has designed us and often quite worse by choice, have an infinite capacity for taking things for granted, how can the world fail to be otherwise?
We human beings don’t need to be taught humanity. We need to learn how not to be inhuman.
