British Columbians’ are a lucky lot, living in one of the most beautiful and diverse natural settings in the world and benefiting from an economy that use to provide a majority of Canadians with high paying employment, before NAFTA that is.

People born and living in BC have a chance to live a lifestyle that billions of hardworking individuals in less-industrial nations around the world would love to emulate, if the resources existed where they live, but this just isn’t the case for the majority of nations in the world that were never blessed with the abundance we like to waste.

Being born in BC is a privilege that many of my fellow British Columbians take for granted on a daily basis and have for generations, but life is about to change, probably for the better, considering the reality of living on planet Earth in the twenty first century.

The ability to drive, work, live and raise our children in Canada is a privilege, not an absolute, we are reminded of this more and more everyday as we compare our lifestyle to the majority of human life on the planet and notice the degradation of our lifestyle in Canada on a daily basis.

The levelling of economic conditions in Canada and British Columbia compared to the rest of the world leaves Canadians still currently above the economic conditions existing in most of the world, but the world is catching up fast and threatening to overcome our lead, which will change life in Canada and BC in ways many of my fellow British Columbians’ appear not ready to accept as a coming reality of Canadian life, as a storm on the Canadian social environment we will have to deal with.

Will the expectations of Canadians come down to levels consistent with the current global market conditions and make the changes to our lifestyle necessary to compete with humans willing to work harder for less, we as Canadians don’t have a choice, if we want life on Earth to continue for our children.

To complete with hungrier, more determined competition around the world in the global marketplace, a hungrier Canadian worker will need to emerge, and with the rise in the cost of everything we treasure in Canada, this is an absolute if we are to compete equally for the necessities of life on spaceship Earth.

The rest of the world is getting hungrier and more determined everyday to achieve the lifestyle we enjoy in North America and many of the industrialised countries around the world. A growing tidal wave of humanity with desires Mother Earth won’t be able to contend with, desires that if manifested will likely leave the environment writing on the wall and spaceship Earth a ball of greenhouse gases.

We need to find away to reach the billions of individuals, who can’t be blamed for wanting what we have always had, that the Earth cannot stand an additional two billion humans living as we do, before they change the Earth in ways that will be immutable.
